Day 12 in the Classroom

Period 3 / 3-D / Clay Wind Chimes

Look on Edmodo at the Research Workbook Outline Information. Look and make sure you have everything on the checklist. Be neat and clean. Have 3 or more thumbnail sketches and give me your thoughts about the thumbnails. Have your vocabulary requirements. Did you look at any artwork? Explain what you saw and did it influence you in any way. Any research you do write down and in complete sentences. Requirements: each piece must be 4 - 6 inches, must have a center piece, 6 - 8 pieces, carve or add clay to your design, cannot be flat must be dimensional.

Period 4 / Pre-IB / Value composition drawing

The examination book in 12 grade, 60% of the exam is on the research book. Rubric is different for SL (standard level) and HL (higher level). 9/10th grade is taught on the different mediums.

Research, annotate in the notebook, cite. If you go to look up www.onepointperspective.com make sure you cite it. Look at the proportion perspectively. What did you see? Perspective, angles, the way that you see, direction. Research to gain knowledge. Your opinion is important. End of year we will have an architectural project, we will draw a house and then make it out of foam board. It was during the renaissance that the sciences were studied. Math became important which brought about the study of perspective. Write about your observations, talk about composition, movement and placement. Write in complete sentences.

Period 5 / Photography I & II, AP, IB / Discussion - Research book

  • Project image information for each of the 3 photos. What did you do to the work and why you chose to do what you did?
  • Did you look at any artwork that applies to your subject, idea, etc.
  • Cite your artwork.
  • Overall notes from project such as photoshop notes, techniques, discussions.
  • Reflection on what you did and how it turned out.
Article on Douglas Eng's photography from the Florida Times, "Beauty Where We Live". Photography showcases city's creeks which is a change from city scapes.
What is modern art? When did it start? It is the artist's interpretation that defines what modern art is. Cave art seen with a candle showed the animals moving because of the flickering light. This can be termed modern.

Day 11 in the Classroom

Period 3 / 3-D / Sketchbooks - Clay Projects

Must have vocabulary words written in journal. Will be grading sketches for clay chimes and wire sculpture. Make sure heading on every page, date, and page numbers. Questions please ask me. Saw a journal with a jean pocket on the front decoupaged with her photographs. She does the same every year but decorates differently yearly. So far she has three journals. Teacher is looking for structure for each page. Explain your research.

Period 4 / Pre-IB / Value drawing composition - due!

Complete composition and turn in on my desk. Remember to blend.
Vocabulary words get off of Edmodo.

Period 5 / Photography I & II, AP, IB

Reteach. Make sure your research book is nice and neat. Look on Edmodo for the requirements for your journal. Write your thoughts. Retool, rethink, reexamine. Write about your artwork. What did you do to your work? Project requirements gives you your rubric of what is expected in your project. In your research explore different artists. Does their work influence your work? Does your research explore different art techniques? Did you incorporate these techniques into your artwork? Did you explore a website? Be sure to cite this website in your journal. Research over and above to learn about what you are doing. Gain knowledge.

Day 10 in the Classroom

Period 3 / 3-D / Demo on Clay Prep

Roll out on newspaper about 1/4 of an inch thick. Throw wads of clay to get the bubbles out, otherwise in the kiln it will explode not only ruin your project but other students as well. Make sure you have drawn out your sketches in your journal to go by for once the clay dries you can't change your design. When clay becomes cold it is drying out. Bring in newspaper.

Period 4 / Pre-IB, 9th / Value Drawing

On Edmodo the vocabulary words are posted. 9/25 - still life due. Next week one point perspective on Monday & Tuesday. 9/30 - vocabulary quiz. Homework - perspective drawing. Blend your lines in your value drawing. Put another piece of paper down so you don't smudge. Think about the composition, placement of objects and the movement.

Period 5 / Photography I & II, AP, IB

Stop, look & listen. 9/30 - vocabulary words. 10/1 - Project 2 - 3 images with research. EV setting. 10/6 - Project 3 - 40+ images on scenes. Friday class discussion on article.

Observed journals being graded with their project, which was photographs. A student had put a colored bird behind typography. She also had a dragon blowing the type blurb. Teacher wants the photos to be small and more written annotation. When looking at artist what did you gain? How did the artist influence you?

Wondering if white space in the journals is actually intimidating to the student. Like wandering in a snowstorm lost for expression (typography). Notice the younger and newer students are more hesitant than the older and more experienced students. The students have the option to record in spiral bound notebooks and then neatly add to their journal. This is method is the preferred method for those that are new to journaling.

Teacher's white board and the dates of assignments. It is the first thing that he goes over after attendance. He constantly reminds students about due date and what should be in their journals.

Day 9 in the Classroom

3rd Period / 3-D / Presenting Clay Construction

Have research book out to take notes. On teacher's Pinterest board shows a board on wind chimes.
Heading in journal should be Project 3 - Clay Wind Chimes, with page number in lower right corner and date in upper right.

Requirements

  • Each piece must be at least 4 inches tall, maximum 6 inches
  • 6 - 8 pieces with a center piece
  • Must have a theme / motif
  • Carve in designs
  • Pieces cannot be flat
  • When researching write down sites that you found interesting in your journal. Write in complete sentences.
Bring newspapers to roll the clay out on. Do not sit at the computer with clay.
Cleanup - use sponges to wipe tables down. Clay sponges used only on the clay, use rolling pins to roll out clay, clay can shrink 30%, clay is dirt, if it breaks when drying can't be fixed, throw clay on table to get the bubbles out, roll out to 1/4 of an inch not any thinner, there is white clay and terra cotta clay.

4th Period / Pre-IB / Value Composition Drawing
Project 3 - Composition - think about placement of objects. When shading use side of pencil, no scribbling. Remind students drawing must have a light source, negative / positive space, blending, and a piece of paper down so there isn't any smudging. Also there must be a composition of objects and movement through the piece. Think about where the highlight is and the different values. Accent dark areas are only 10% of the work.

5th Period / Photography I & II, IB, AP
Grading journal books - Observed a combination of black and colored inks and students tend to write to the edge of the page.

Questions Asked of the Teacher

How long have you been having student's journal in the classroom?

I have been teaching 23 years and using the journal with my first class in junior high. I have always believed that the journal is a wonderful tool for learning. He used journaling before the school became an International Baccalaureate School.

How do you go about introducing students to the journaling?

Teacher has a background in psychology and says students tend to not retain information. He makes sure to go over his expectations and due dates posted on his white board at the beginning of class. Papers are posted to Edmodo so students always have access to information.

What do you expect content wise to be included in journaling?

Teacher adjusts journaling expectations yearly. This year it is less decorative with the emphasis more on the aspects of writing. This is based on the test scores that showed students were lacking in writing skills. When I did my internship with this teacher the students were using more decorative methods incorporated into their journaling.

How do you go about assessing journaling?

The requirements are the rubric. Teacher has been teaching so long he can break it down in his head.

What are the benefits that you see in journaling?

The thought process shows growth and development in a concrete document. This method of learning translates across the board (subject areas) and sets up a methodology that incorporates into a life time of breaking down information and recording it.

Day 8 in the Classroom

Example of some of the vocabulary words used for the weekly entry into the journal.
Vibrance, rule of thirds, depth of field, value, negative space, composition, abstract, detail, hue, perspective, balance, proportion, focal point, fractal, aplomb, ameliorate, callow, epitome, stringent, surmise.

Period 3 / 3-D / Grading of projects & journals

Students are to record in notebooks first before creatively adding to the journal. I have noticed that the students tend to write in pencil and write really small. They have the option to take notes in a spiral notebook and then transfer information to their journal. Teacher is trying to encourage them to write with marker or pen so there is less smear and entry appears clearer.

Teacher was having students come up to the desk to grade journal and wire sculptures. He also told students he was posting vocabulary words on Edmodo and if they were in their journal by Friday they would get 20 points. They also need to research wind chimes and do some thumbnails for their next project. In their journals needed to have pictures of insects, sketches, and writing that is in-depth into their thoughts about what they were doing for their project and why? It is the writing that is important.

Journals must have heading on each page and the date in the upper right corner and the page numbers in the lower right. Must have 3 thumbnails and pic of insect from research. Advanced 3-D student had done a wire sculpture of a dragon using silver wire which was really well done. Can use colored pencils. Explain self. Write out the requirements. When completely done will photograph wire sculptures for portfolios. Always ask if you have a question. Lots of blank spaces, fill the pages. I noticed lots of small itty, bitty writing. One student actually filled the page with the sketch of a bug with her written notes on the opposite page. It is not about decorating it is about the information.

New project - wind chime, find a theme. Will have 6-8 hanging pieces with a center piece. All pieces are to be made from clay.

Period 4 / Pre-IB 9th / Shading/Composition Project

Due at the end of class tomorrow. Rubric - shading with no outline of objects, direction of light source, composition, use side of pencil, blend away negative space, blend it. Think about composition and the movement in the piece. Work on shading. Turn pencil in the pencil sharpener when sharpening.

Period 5 / Photography, AP, IB

Read article there will be questions on Friday.

Grade today Photography I. Project 2. Bring up exam (journal) book, have 3 images in the complete folder saved as a jpeg. EV project. Grade on research on photoshop and photo project.

Project 3. IOS/EV 3 images with 3 scenes in different settings. Write in complete sentences about what you do to the images and why. Explain self. Research, reflect, look for artwork.

Day 3 in the Classroom

3rd period, 3-D, wire insect sculpture
Research look up artists, artwork, technique how did they make the sculpture.
Sketchbook have measurements, notes on technique i.e. weaving of wires & twisting.

4th period, pre IB, shading
Bouncy balls in sketchbook, more than one. Blending, blend lines away. Use side of pencil and its about the pressure. Homework in sketchbook. Box divided into ten sections, white to black create a grey scale.

5th period, Photography, AB, IB, 2-D
This is a crazy confusing class of different groups. 40+ images due. Explain in sketchbook what you like or did not like in how you treated the images. Glimpsed some crazy looking entries in some of the journal books and want to see more.

Day 2 in the Classroom

I arrive at 9:00 am. Period 3 starts at 9:15 am which is the 3-D class. Students arrive into the classroom bringing out their journals. Teacher reminds them of important upcoming dates which should be written down in their journals. This includes due dates for projects, vocabulary quizzes, and so forth. The 3-D students have sketches for their wire sculpture insects in their journals but selected one from which they will create the sculpture from. They use these sketches to work from while forming their wire sculpture. The colored wire is donated from AT&T.

Period 4 is the pre IB, 9th grade, Art I group. They are working on shading circles in their sketchbook  so that no lines are visible. Teacher graded homework assignment in their sketchbook of a corner of room practicing on proportion. Had students come up, told them what they needed to work on, and whether they showed effort. Possible 30 points total.

Period 5 is Photography I, AB, 2-D, IB. This is the teacher's crazy class that is a mixture of different classes. He goes over the assignments, due dates, quizzes for each group up on his dry erase board so each group is reminded of what is coming up. 40+ images will be due for photography. Certain groups of photos need to be put in specifically labeled folders. In their journals they need to annotate how they treated the photo and how it was affected. They need to reflect if they liked the outcome or not and why.
